Gone Fishin' Middle Sound Sort

This engaging, hands-on activity provides targeted practice with identifying and sorting middle sounds in CVC words. Students “go fishing” by catching fish cards, each featuring a CVC picture. After naming the word, students isolate the middle sound and sort the fish into the correct category. This playful format reinforces phonemic awareness and short vowel recognition while keeping students actively engaged.

For added engagement, students can use a magnetic fishing pole to “catch” the fish (not included). However, the activity can be easily used without additional materials by having students simply pick or “catch” a fish and sort it.
